Alpha Arbutin: A-Z of Skincare

Apha Arbutin

Do you know how to decipher the skincare ingredients? Do you know your alpha hydroxy acids from your hylauronic acid? It seems every like every day there’s a new miracle ingredient that’s going to change your life! It can be so overwhelming!

First up is A for Alpha Arbutin.

If pigmentation is an issue, you should check out this out!

What is Arbutin?

Extracted from the bearberry plant, this complexion-brightening antioxidant is known as a natural (and milder) alternative to skin-bleaching hydroquinone. There are two forms of arbutin: alpha arbutin and beta arbutin. Research suggests that alpha-arbutin is more stable and effective than its beta form. Alpha arbutin is a clean, water-soluble form of arbutin and is considered one of the most advanced natural ingredients in skincare.

What is does.

Alpha Arbutin is very effective in treating pigmentations, age spots and it can also inhibit the negative effects of UV-radiation thanks to its sun protection properties. Arbutin evens out skin tone and is also effective in treating acne scars.

Why Alpha Arbutin works.

While hydroquinone eliminates the cells that produce pigmentation and melanin (skin colour), arbutin suppresses the enzymes that stimulate these cells without killing them completely, which has a milder effect and is less irritating on the skin. This prevents melanin production from the start, thus preventing and minimizing pigmentations.

How to use Alpha Arbutin.

Arbutin can also be combined with other skincare ingredients to maximize its efficacy, for example, with alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) to exfoliate skin and facilitate its absorption of arbutin. When paired with Vitamin C, arbutin imparts even skin tone with improved radiance.

When to use it.

It can be used in the am and pm. If using it as a single product eg The Ordinarys version, it should be one of the first serums you apply due to its watery texture.

I use The Ordinarys version (surprise surprise!) a couple of times a week during winter and twice a day during summer. The Inkey also do a Alpha Abrutin serum.

You will also find it in Paulas Choice Radiance Renewal Mask and Resist Brightening Essence, Sunday Riley Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream and many more. But for just under 9€, I'll always recommend The Ordinarys version.

Check and see if any of them are on sale with my Beauty Discount Page!
